What to expect from your first Barre Class
Here are a few things to keep in mind to make sure you get the most out of your first Barre experience.
Before your class, dress in comfortable yoga pants and a form fitting athletic top, some of the positions will require that you’ll be in shorts. It’s extremely important that your instructor is able to see your exact body alignment

Before class begins take a place close to the front mirror; you’ll learn the moves faster if you can watch yourself and your classmates. Your workout will begin with a short warm up period of stretching and breathing exercises. After the warm up your instructor will lead you through a series of workouts that individually exercise different areas of your body.   You will hold positions that force your muscles to support different parts of your body. Your muscles will become fatigued; when you feel yourself shaking don’t be alarmed. Shaking is normal and signals that your muscles are beginning to fail and tone. You will then use ballet, yoga and Pilates moves to stretch and elongate your muscles.
While the ballet barre is the equipment most commonly associated with the Barre method, it won’t be the only equipment in the studio.  Light hand weights will be used for arm strengthening exercises, small exercise balls for thigh workouts, and elastic bands during stretching.
Barre exercises are incredibly low impact; they put no stress on your joints, tendons, ligaments or spine. However, during your first class you may find that you can’t hold your positions as long as you’d like or that you aren’t as flexible as your classmates. You will most definitely be sore after your first class because of the high intensity of the workouts . Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your workout to ensure you don’t become dehydrated. It’s also a good idea to pack a banana to eat right after your class; the potassium will help prevent post workout muscle cramps.
Happy workout!
